Can you remember the old fashioned barber shops where the barber would run the straight edge razor over a large leather strip before he started to shave your dad? What was he doing? The barber was stropping the razor over a leather razor strop to sharpen the blade to provide a smooth and comfortably close shave.

With the disappearance of many old time barber shops, it’s up to you to continue the tradition of straight edge razor shaving and stropping your razors before you shave.

It’s becoming harder to find straight edge shaving supplies at your local stores. So you will have to shop online for most of your safety razors, straight razor handles, shaving brushes and mugs, and of course your razor strops.

Then you just have to learn the fine art of sharpening your razors. It takes a little practice but there are plenty of instructional videos on YouTube that show you how to shave with a straight razor and how to strop your razors.

While the initial costs of starting straight razor shaving may seem high, you will save money in the long run over the cost of Gillette and Schick’s $4 and $5 razor blades compared to 50 straight edge razors for around $10 or so depending on which brand you buy.
